She immediately tensed. Since she had her back to him, she could not see his face, and she had no idea as to what he was trying to do.
She found herself at a crossroad. “What should I do if he tries something?” she thought to herself.
To her surprise, he did not move after lying down.
She could feel his breath drift across her skin, and she could hear his strong steady heartbeat. His breathing slowed, and he wrapped his arms around her waist, the way he would when they had still been in love all those years ago.
She opened her eyes as her mind drifted back to the past. Tears began to gather in her eyes as the men behind her slept.
She lifted his arm off of her and sat up. Wiping her tears away, she studied Elliot as he slept.
Her gaze traveled to his chest, and she suddenly felt the urge to see the wound on his chest. She began unbuttoning his shirt.
As soon as she unbuttoned the first button, he scowled and instinctively shoved her hands away.
She looked at him and thought to herself, “But he’s asleep! How can he be so alert when he doesn’t even know who touched him? Has he always been so alert to the touch of others? But if that’s the case, how did he manage to be intimate with Zoe?”
She grew depressed as she thought about him and Zoe.
She had never been with any other man apart from him, so she could not tolerate the fact that he had been with another woman. She could not possibly accept a flawed relationship, even when his heart still beats for her.
She sat there blankly as tears rolled down her face. She knew that her pregnancy made her emotional, and she had been trying to remain calm in a way to fight against the effects of her hormones. However, she had never expected Elliot to be able to break her with such ease.
As though he had sensed something, Elliot opened his eyes.
Avery did not have the time to adjust herself and so he saw her as she was.
“What’s wrong, Avery?” Startled, he sat up hastily. He was not fully awake, and he reached out to wipe away her tears. “Why are you crying?”
Embarrassed, she stopped crying and came up with an excuse. “I wanted to see your wound, but you shoved me away.”
“I’m sorry. I was asleep,” he said, before unbuttoning his own shirt. “The wound isn’t pleasant.”
When the wound was fully exposed, she felt as though the hideous wound was mocking her.
Avery lightly touched it with the soft pads of her fingers.
He shivered slightly and grabbed her hand. “Don’t touch it. It doesn’t hurt anymore.”
She retracted her hand from his and said, “You are a madman! If you had died, both your family and friends would have thought that I had done it, even if they had not come seeking vengeance! I could have been condemned for life!”
He studied her red eyes and pursed his lips.
He had acted on impulse because she had provoked him. He loved Avery so much, and yet, she had wanted to k**l him. He had ceased to see the meaning to life and thought it better to set himself free through d***h.
“Are you blaming me for wanting to k**l you?” Though Elliot did not say anything, Avery had guessed what he was thinking and said, “What I think is my own business. It doesn’t count as long as I don’t act on it!”
